Christmas lasts until Santo Amaro
Christmas season in Madeira is only over after Santo Amaro’s day, on the 15th January. Santo Amaro is the cleaning of the kitchen shelves day (varrer dos armários), an old tradition of several parishes of Madeira, like Santa Cruz whose patron is Santo Amaro.
People visit their friends and family carrying a broom and the hosts have a table full of the remaining Christmas delicacies. So after eating and drinking a broom is left with the date and year carved on it, to bring good luck to the host.
So, until middle January there is still the opportunity to admire the Christmas scenes built all around the island and which will only be dismantled by Santo Amaro’s day.
